It was a high-profile job with high expectations. And, just for fun, there wasn’t going to be a long time to prepare for it.

That was the combination of factors facing Durant Crum when he took over as the new head coach of the boys basketball team at Battle Creek Central.

The Battle Creek Enquirer All-City Boys Basketball Team is made up of players from the five city schools and is voted on by the city coaches and the Enquirer sports staff.

But Crum, getting the job just weeks before the season started, met and exceeded the expectations of many as he led the Bearcats to a banner year in 2015-16.

For his efforts, Crum has been named as the 2015-16 Battle Creek Enquirer All-City Boys Basketball Team Coach of the Year.

The 2015-16 Battle Creek Enquirer All-City Boys Basketball Team is made up of players from the five city schools and is selected by the city coaches and the Enquirer sports staff.

Crum helped Battle Creek Central to its first Class A district title in boys basketball since 2008, ending a run of seven seasons where the traditional basketball powerhouse had seen its postseason end in the early going of the tournament.

Crum, a former coach at Albion High School, had also helped BCC to a 17-7 record and the most wins in the city, knocking off city rivals Harper Creek and Lakeview in the process.

Crum is joined on the team by three BCC players, including juniors Demetrius Craig and Juan Warren, and senior Cyntell Williams.

Pennfield, which went 12-9 on the year, adds two players to the All-City team in senior Steffen Kinne and junior Ron Jamierson.

Harper Creek, also at 12-9, also has two players on the team in junior Jeremiah Davis and senior Brandan Settles.

Two juniors were selected from St. Philip as Ben Swagler and Drew Lantinga made the team for the Tigers, who went 8-13.

Lakeview, which went 6-15, added junior C.J. Foster and senior Jared Fisk.
