Lakeview's Bussler leads All-City girls hoop team

Last year, he did something at his school that hadn’t been done before and it garnered him Coach of the Year honors.

This year he repeated that effort as he again did something that hadn’t been done before at his school, which makes him a repeat winner of the top coaching honor in city basketball.

Lakeview’s Don Bussler has been named the Battle Creek Enquirer All-City Girls Basketball Team Coach of the Year.

Bussler, who has coached the Spartans for 20-plus years, led Lakeview to its second-straight district title in girls basketball after knocking off Battle Creek Central in the championship game.

It is the first back-to-back Class A district crowns in girls basketball for Lakeview in the history of the school. It comes a year after the Spartans had won the first Class A district title in girls basketball in the history of the program.

The 2015-16 Battle Creek Enquirer All-City Girls Basketball Team is made up of players from the five city schools and is selected by the city coaches and the Enquirer sports staff.

Meet the 2015-16 Enquirer All-City Boys Basketball Team

Bussler helped Lakeview to a 15-8 record during the 2015-16 season, matching the win total of last year’s squad with only two returning seniors on the team.

Bussler is joined on the team by three Lakeview players, including juniors Ava Cook, Emily Eldridge and Chloe McAllister.

Harper Creek, which went 17-6 on the season, also adds three players on the team, including juniors Charley Andrews and Jacey Bowers as well as senior Olivia Leson.

Helping St. Philip to a 16-6 record and earning All-City honors were senior Megan Gordon and junior Kameron Haley.

Pennfield went 9-12 and adds sophomores Naomi Davis and Claire LeRoux.

After going 4-17, Battle Creek Central senior Jamesha Smith and junior Tamera Gills were added to the team.
